New functionality added today

Today we added the following new features to myfamily 2.0:

1. Invitation Permissions - Site admins can now select what types of users can invite people to their site. To try it out, login to your site and go to Site Settings then to the Administrator Settings tab. (Of course only admins will be able to try this out)

2. Finding Tagged Items on Your Site – Click on a tag, and you’ll be taken to a “search result” page that displays all items on that site with the same tag. You can filter your search results by clicking on the ‘edit search’ link and selecting the item types and members that you’d like to see. You can also add to or change your search results by entering new tags in the ‘with these tags field’. Keep in mind that right now we’re only returning search results that are exact matches. We’ll be beefing up our search capabilities in a future release.

3. Login Help - We hear from a lot of users who are having trouble logging in to their sites. We’ve released two small changes today that should help fix some of those issues.

The first one is the ability to request a list of usernames that are associated with your email address. We’ve learned that a lot of users don’t realize when they have more than one username associated with the same email address (e.g. mom & dad sharing an email address, or someone creates a unique username to join a site, but uses the same email address that is already attached to a different username on one of their other sites). Next time you login, you’ll notice that we’ve added a message to the top of your personal start page that tells you what email address is on your account, and how many usernames are associated with it. It also provides a link to request a list of all usernames and sites associated with your email address. Once you receive the list, you’ll hopefully be able to find the site you’re looking for, and know how to access it.

The second small enhancement that we hope will help with site accessibility is a simple ‘Remember Me’ check box on the login page. If you want the site to automatically log you in next time you visit, check the box. If you’re using a shared computer (whether in your home or in a public place), and you don’t want to log in automatically, make sure the box is unchecked when you log in.

I know these login enhancements are relatively small, and they certainly don’t address all of the login issues that folks are facing. If you have others that you’d like to add to the list, please let us know.

– UPDATE –
(I can’t believe I forgot this in my original post!)

4. Updated Text Editor - We upgraded the software that we use for our text editor in discussions, comments, etc. So far, it seems like many of the previously reported issues have gone away. Looking forward to hearing whether or not the update makes text entry and edits easier for you.

  1. Thanks for the new updates especially the Administrator right to send out invitation only. I think this is a big issue that alot of members were concern about. I also like the tag search. It was nice being able to see all of the tags that I had for one thing. I haven’t check out the login page yet but that is my next step.

Thank the team for all of their hard work.

  2. Thank you for updates, but sadly I still cannot open any items under Discussions on my own 2.0 migrated site. Have tried all sorts of fixes from feedback and elsewhere online. Obviously I’m not activating. Am I the only one with this glitch?

  3. Thanks for the beginning of Administrator rights! This will make Lainee VERY HAPPY! I actually have my sites set to allow members to invite but I know a lot of people who are pickier than I!

I played with the tag search function a little bit. It’s somewhat difficult as the members of sites that I am on have not used tags much and the migrated ones aren’t showing yet. The edit search function looks interesting, although it seems like a lot of extra clicks, compared to 1.0. (NOT whining or complaining here! Just mentioning!)

And I don’t know about the log-in. When I first made my “practice” beta sites, it would not allow me to create a second username with my e-mail address. It also would not let me open two different sites at the same time (guess what?! Just now I have done that! Haven’t tried moving around much, but I have two tabs open to 2.0 – one to the Mentors site and one to my alumni site!) Anyway, I’ll have to look into this more.

Thanks again. Hope you can unscramble the member e-mail thingy and get us into the 2.0 Community site soon. Also looking forward to seeing migration moving again sometime!

  4. Shane Clark, now this is exciting to see! You are doing the small but rapid incremental changes, you are notifying us about them in a timely manner, you’ve admitted past mistakes, and you’ve lightened the tensions by giving members total freedom in choice. Even the ability to dabble in all possibilities. This is a very good sign and example of how to do it right.

I’d love to get very excited about 2.0 all over again. Bring it on!

    Thank you!

  5. Thanks Shane and the Beta team for adding some Admin rights, it is a great start but it would makes us more happy for the Admins. to be able to turn off things that are not useful to our sites. I haven’t snpoped around yet lol but i will.
    Again thanks, Wanda.

  6. Thanks Brother John. We’re completely dedicated to rapid and incremental improvements these days. Should see lots of improvements and new enhancements over the weeks to come. :-)

  7. Shane, I think the Updated Editor was the first thing I noticed (after I saw tags working). Thought I was imagining it at first ! Sure made a difference for me!

    Great job on the updates!

  8. Hiya Shane,

Thanks for the beginnings of the admin rights…but like Wanda above, I would be ecstatic with the ability to turn off certain sections of my sites that are not conducive to my sites.

Also, while I am thinking about it…several members have posed the question to me:

“Why, if they are building the new sites from scratch, could they have been built to look like the old sites since we like the user friendly way the old sites are laid out? I can’t find anything on the new sites!”

So is there an answer that I can give back to them? Well, something besides “I dunno!” LOL

And thanks again for the beginnings of admin rights! :)

  9. Miss Irene,

On my 1.0 sites where the invites can only be used by one person I have all three of my sites set to allow members to invite…but I just do not like that box there that can be checked to allow forwarding of that invite. IF I ever decide to move my sites to 2.0, I will not be allowing members to invite…I think/hope I can train my admins to make sure that box is NOT checked! LOL

  10. Thanks for giving the admins rights you have added for admins to not allow all members to invite others.

  11. The line telling how many sites are linked to my e-mail address is quite helpful.

My husband has 2 sites linked to his e-mail…..one is V 1.0 and the other is V2.0. He has 2 separate user names for the sites. Is there a way to merge them to the same user name yet without losing all the posts he has made to the 2.0 site or is that one still in the works?

Thanks for the update and improvements!

  12. Admin.’s and editing user information.

I was wondering if Admin/managers will be able to edit full member information on 2.0 like they do with 1.0. I have members who can’t get on the site and would like to change their email addresses but I can’t help them at all. Is this something being worked on? I would like to have full control over my family site for this reason.

  13. Could it be that a bug was introduced when the new changes were installed. When I am viewing a post in the News section, the previous and next buttoms are not working. And the screen shows the word null near the next button.

  14. I agree with Irene about the edit search being difficult to get too…so many clicks. Also, you have to know what post you have to go to in order to find one with a tag. Once you find that…if there are any, most of my members won’t even know to click on that tag to get the edit search. I’m very excited that we are getting closer to a search ability, but couldn’t the edit search be put somewhere on the front page and easy to find?

  15. Patti, I’m with you on that one. I’ve tried, with some small success to save the link address of the Search Box when I finally get it in front of me. It’s still not perfect but in two clicks I’m able to start typing in the Search Box for what I’m looking for. So… it helps a little.

But I agree, the search box should probably be on the front page, or better yet, somewhere that’s ALWAYS clickable.

But we must also remember that it’s is a brand spanking new feature and we’ve been told it’s still in infancy. Good things to come I’d think.

  16. During the day today everything was working perfectly. Tonight the pictures from my Good/Blankenship site are turning up in both the May/Hutchison and Vinson/Baker sites. When I tried to leave messages on both of the latter sites explaining the problem to members, the messages all ended up in the Vinson/Baker site and I can’t get the extras to delete. I write it on the May/Hutchison site, then when I post it reverts to the Vinson/Baker site. HELP!!! Plus, I want my pictures back where they belong.

  17. Admin.’s and editing user information.
I’m with Marjorie. I have users that have quit trying to use my 2.0 site because I can’t manage their account. I like all the capabilities we have with the 1.0 user administration.

  18. F A N T A B U L O U S!!!! The invitation issue was a real bone of contention for me and I just want to thankyou for addressing that issue! This is certainly a step in the right direction!
    Thanks so much!
    Susie

  19. Okay, part of yesterday’s problem has been solved. All of my Good/Blankenship pictures are where they belong. Now all of the May/Hutchison pictures are turning up in the Vinson/Baker site. The albums are fine, but on “all photos” the first page is mostly Vinson’s, then it turns to May’s. The other pages are all May’s. Then when I go back to the first page, the Vinson’s have disappeared there, and it’s only May’s. Also, when I post on “News” on one site, it shows up on the other. At least today, I can delete. So, I still need help.

  20. Well, I was wrong! Now the Good/Blankenship site has pictures on it from the May/Hutchison site and when I posted to tell members about the problem, the post ended up on the May/Hutchison site. I have put so much time on all three of these sites that I am totally bummed out about the whole thing. Up until now, I have been very patient since I know that this is still in the development stages, but how could it go this awry???

  21. Marylyn, You may want to sign onto the 2.0 community site. People are really getting answers from MF !!

    http://www.myfamily.com/public.aspx?mfsid=48597

  22. Thanks MF…whatever you did, it seems to have worked. All of the pictures are back where they belong and everything seems to be working again.

Thanks also, Daneille for the suggestion. I’ll do that.

  23. Nice to think about new functionality guys, but how about FIXING YOUR DARN BUGS FIRST!

They are REALLY driving me nuts. Things disappear, subscriptions don’t work, functionality is there and then it isn’t, etc., etc.,

I love what you’re trying to do and the potential is great, but this REALLY should have been a non-public beta for a longer period (or you need to hire better QA people) before you released to the public!

    Thanks
    K

  24. As far as search is concerned, we eventually need to be able to search all the tags in all the sections by a click from somewhere on the home page.

  25. Oh yes, I agree completely Gloria! Also, it seems to me that we need a drop down list of tags that have already been named so we can just chose one of those. I see so many duplications of tags now, naming a tag similar names such theme….themes…instructions..tutorials, and so on. Plus having a drop down list helps to remember what we named a tag so we have all posts pertaining to a certain tag under the same name. I named one banner graphics….I think…then couldn’t remember if I had used graphic or graphics, no what I mean! LOL

  26. The log on issue still exists. Each time I visit the site, I log on two or more times. I’ve had complaints from members, so I know this is not just happening to me.

I have a suggestion. In my opinion, the tags on 2.0 are not an efficient means for a search engine on a site like myfamily.com where all members are encouraged to add photos, etc. Many members that post their items are not going to bother with adding tags. That means an administrator has to go in and manually add tags to all items posted or they will get lost in the sea of all non-tagged items posted.

On myfamily.com 1.0, the search engine automatically works according to the title and information of the item posted. So if someone posts a photo, etc., and gives it a title and other information, they automatically assign tags without thinking about it. That is much more efficient and a lot less time consuming for administrators.

If you can supply a search engine on 1.0 that is not dependent on members assigning tags, then I am sure you can do so on 2.0. Perhaps this is something for you to think about.

Tags work well on sites where all items are added by one or a few people for others to enjoy, but myfamily.com is a site where participation in adding items is shared and encouraged. Again, this is just my opinion and possibly a helpful suggestion for 2.0.

Thank you so much for allowing us to keep 1.0!!! I do plan to keep my 2.0 sites that I started separately.

  27. What a surprise to go to the blog tonight and find we have the tag search! YEAH! Though, I might add if one didn’t know it was there, they surely wouldn’t know how to get to it, or what to do with it. Not everyone is a clicker to see what happens. I did post a news bulletin for my members.
I like having the ability to limit who sends out invites, but I also have never seen the public page where someone can ask for an invite.
I, too, am looking forward to being able to edit more of the member’s information, particularly their username/password for them.
These are nice additions, and make the site much more useable.

Now for the downside I experienced:
Everytime I click on an item or topic, the page changes color. This is about making me blind as I continue to tag what has been uploaded. I have not been able to find a place to get it to stop. If you could help with this, it would be appreciated.
Thanks :-) Things are looking upward.

  28. Also, a great big thank you for letting us have the choice between 1 or 2 :-)

  29. Since this blog is not used much now, you may want to join the community 2.0 site, where MF developers drop in and answer many of our questions.

  30. Well, I’m new to all of this. So 2.0 is the first I’m using. Actually, I was REALLY confused. I signed up one day and had 1.0 and came back the next to 2.0. For a few minutes, I thought I had been had or something. Anyway, I have a couple of issues and I don’t know if it’s the new program/bugs or if I just don’t know what I’m doing…

    1. On the Setting Page it claims I can make changes in HTML but there is no option to GO to HTML anywhere on the page. Also, how can you change the font style/color on your welcome message and family name??

    2. On the Custom Theme setting page, it tells you you can upload a background and picture and then manipulate it in a grid. THERE’S NO GRID!!!

    3. FAMILY TREES. My website is for a Sorority, not a standard family. How can I create a family tree that isn’t done in Ancestry.com and display it on that page??

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

  31. I thought I was going to be sick yesterday with the colors changing on our site page…thought someone was playing games with the controls???? Please help stop the color changing! Please.
Thank you so much. I know it is hard to please all of us.

  32. changes in HTML Here I have just created my own HTML code and it works:-)

On the Custom Theme Untick the 2 boxes that come up after you have uploaded your image then you can select a grid place.. But with the free version you will not be able to save it.

FAMILY TREES Create a text file and add that to your files Area or just add a GEDCOM file to your files area.

  33. Getting a Script error every time I comae to this page.. Just started happening today..

    http://img247.imageshack.us/img247/9516/clip4lr7.jpg

  34. The title for my home page photo is no longer showing up. Does anyone know why?

  35. Norm, You are a genious. I don’t know why I didn’t notice that you can choose a particular grid space. Now I have two front page pictures! Thank you!!!

  36. Debbie, on April 25th, 2008 at 10:04 am Said:
The title for my home page photo is no longer showing up. Does anyone know why?

I believe it did use to show the title of a photo but with an update awhile back the title stopped appearing with the photo. I kinda liked that myself instead of a plain photo.

  37. Sandra, Thanks for the response. Personally, I like to see the title to identify the people in the photo. Maybe that is because we have a lot of photos. We use random photos for the home page, rather than one set photo. It is nice to know who you are looking at when a photo pops up, without having to click on it to find out. To me, the photo looks more plain without the title. Just a difference of opinion. I really miss the title. I hope the missing title for the front page photo is an error that will be fixed, rather than being permanent.

  38. How do I see a list of tags? I see the ones I’ve assigned to individual photos, docs, etc. but can’t find the whole set anywhere.

  39. There is no list of tags, Barbara. The idea is for each originator to ‘tag’ his post with what he feels are the most important ideas. If you click on a particular tag on a post, it will take you to a list of posts that share that tag. Another little cool item we have noticed is that as a tag is used more and more frequently, it gets larger and larger in the tag list for your post (or my post or any post). And if you hover your cursor over a particular tag, it will show you the percentage of times that tag has been used on your site! On the 2.0 Community site, any post tagged ’sean’ will now show it in approximately 18 point font! (People seem to think Sean needs to know everything – NOW! lol)

The whole tagging thing works a little differently from our old categories – a little freer for the average user, a little less control by the administrator. But ultimately a more useful tool when all is said and done. We just have to think outside the ‘category’ box!

  40. Barbara, You have to go to an item that has tags to find the other items with the same or similar tags. So, if you need to look for a single photo posted a long time ago that is totally different than anything else on the site and the tags don’t match, good luck in finding it because there is no search engine on 2.0. You no longer have the automatic convenience of the 1.0 search engine. Of course, you can manually go through each and every page until you find that lost item, but if you have a thousand or more pictures, etc., that might take a little time.

You have to go to an item posted, to find other related items posted. There is no master list or search engine box. If I have this wrong, somebody correct me, but this is how I see that it works. I’m open to learn, if I’m missing something.

  41. I have left numerous e-mails to support and to no avail. I have had trouble with the invites. I have to send them manually. Anyone else out there with this problem???

  42. Danielle Grimes said this (see above)

If this link is not clickable, copy the above address and paste it into your browser.

This blog is NOT the best place to learn about 2.0 The Community site is a much better place.

  43. Later on a search feature will be added to 2.0…it will search, tags, plus all other text. So much better than 1.0 where it only searched titles.

This is the type of thing the team is answering on the community site. The community site is so much easier to follow. So click on the link in Daneille or Keith’s post or click on MF 2.0 Community Site in the Blogroll on the left side of the page

  44. I got accepted as a member of the community 2.0 site, but for what? –there’s nothing there! I still can’t get my questions answered!

  45. Kathleen said “I have left numerous e-mails to support and to no avail. I have had trouble with the invites. I have to send them manually. Anyone else out there with this problem???”

Yes, I’ve had the problem for at least two weeks. I’ve also sent email to Support and replied when additionala info was requested (such as the browser I’m using). I also joined the Community 2.0 site but the only link on that site is to join or return to this blog. Why direct people to a site that just sends you back where you came from. I’m so frustrated! I asked my Reunion officers to fund for a paid site but I’m not about to spend our limited reunion funds on a site that doesn’t work!

When MF2.0 sent the email invitations, it included a link. Didn’t that link include an embedded temporary password? If it did, how would I know what the password is if I send the invitation manually?

    Anyone have any ideas/suggestions?

  46. Guess what? I clicked the link “back to MyFamily.com 2.0…” thinking I was going to the logon for my site and I found myself on the Community site!!! Why can’t I get there from the Community site “join” page???

  47. Sandra:

check your pull down list of sites.

After my first visit to the 2.0 Community site it appeared there for me. very easy ..It becomes part of your login drop window list.

very informative site and the MF 2.0 team comes all just like the rest of us and experiences just what we do. they will answer questions when they come aboard, also other members there are wonderful in sharing the tips they are finding useful.

  48. I can sense the tension and irritation in the posts I have just read here. I used to feel that way myself until I joined the Community site. What a difference!

It may be the next day but most of the time it is pretty soon after you post a question when someone posts an answer. MF members and others are very helpful on that site. It’s one of the first places I visit when I log onto my computer in the morning.

Thanks for the Community 2.0 site and the help and suggestions offered there. The MF members also share what is in the works for different features being added. At least you know they are making progress.

  49. But you have to remember to tag your questions!! ’sean’ or ‘cliff’ work quite well. Sean usually checks in in the evening and on weekends, Cliff keeps an eye out during the day. And I;ve even seen Lynne Pogue there.

I do wish the MF crew would ID themselves in their screen names, though. I know these people because I’ve been working with them for a year and a half now, but other members are brand new and don’t know who people are. And there are new development team members, too.

  50. I have a paid subscription on the 1.0 website. Can it be transferred over to the 2.0beta site? I would like to get rid of the advertisements.
    Thanks.

  51. All Migrations are on Hold until further notice.. Migration Info

  52. I haven’t followed this site before now – do don’t know if this is a place to get answers or make suggestions to ‘Sean’ of ‘Cliff’ – I too have never had a question answered via the support email, however – I would just like to see some of the fun things from the old site brought to the new site – like the polling feature – we enjoyed that feature and used it quite a bit. Our website is running smoothly though it seems a little disjointed compared to the old – perhaps we are are just used to the old layout? The new site certainly looks nice. Thanks for the opportunity to stay connected – it’s been fun.

  53. Elizabeth, this ’site’ (the blog) is pretty much dead now. I think I saw you over in the 2.0 Community site? That’s where we are exchanging ideas, and where Cliff or Sean or Shane come in and collect ideas and answer (some!) questions.

Bobbi, I believe the simple answer right now is – no. If you started a new 2.0 site and you want to get rid of the ads, right now you have to upgrade. Your 1.0 site will eventually be migrated (it may already exist in 2.0, but with some content, or no content – migration, as Norm points out, is on HOLD). But that migrated site should behave as a paid site if you can get to it.

  54. To check out a 2.0 site migrated/activated/not activated… When on a 2.0 site.

go to: My Account – top of page click on it to open

go to: My memberships – open there

listed will be all sites you are a member. Go to the one you want to view and click on the name. It will show you what is migrated and what is happening
    on the site.

I have not activated my 1.0 to 2.0 sites yet. We like the 1.0 organization and members I have don’t like change, but I do keep up to date with what is happening on my sites via the method I added here.

We do a 2.0 sites that were never 1.0…

    Hope this works for you.

I agree whole-heartedly with this post! Nice about new features but first fix the bugs. And yes email support has been extremely frustrating with the “this is a beta site” line. Yes, we know. I’m still subscribed and where I’m not we all still see ads, so please stop saying that.

Now that I see people mentioning invite issues, I now realize people aren’t opting out they are just not getting them. Doh! I’ll be checking on that one.

Also I noticed a change when looking at photo albums. One used to be able to look at each individual photo in the album by clicking on the picture and going through each and one and would see any comments for that photo or make a comment. Now that is separate you can’t do that from within the album. Does anyone else see this?
So if you want to make or read comments you have to go to all photos, which puts them out of the order the album creator intended. (That was not an upgrade that was a downgrade.) People don’t necessarily have time or want to make a snapgenie. For example my sister has a newborn in the hospital and the quickest and best way to share this (notice she has very very little time) is to make an album and write in the description or make her own comment. We should be able to go straight to the album look at the pictures individually and make a comment. I prefer to click through pictures than to wait for the slideshow to load which distorts the pictures and gives you no options.

Hope someone in there is listening.

  57. Carol, regarding your question about comments no longer being viewed from within albums, yes I too noticed this and agree with you completely about how inconvenient it is for members to (now) have to “find” photos from within the “All Photos” photostream in order to view comments made/left by others. If this is an “improvement” it’s a step backward. If it’s a result of a software upgrade it needs to be fixed.

I sent a bug report on 26 Apr (Case 58408). The response received on the 30th was basically “we’re not seeing what you’re seeing.” Thinking maybe it was something on my end I had several members check and all were experiencing the same problem. I sent another query with very specific examples on 1 May. Still waiting for a response.

  58. Matt, are you a member of the 2.0 Community site? You should express your concerns there, as we are receiving some attention from MF team. There will be others with your same experiences.
