Any photo, video or Photo Story on a myfamily.com site can be embedded elsewhere on the Internet, like on your blog or personal web site. Just click on the ‘Embed This…’ link and copy the HTML code that appears. Then paste it wherever you’d like. You can even embed as a comment on any of your myfamily.com sites. |
“My Recent Contributions” On Member Profiles

The Member Profile page now contains much more than just a person’s contact information. We just added a section called “My Recent Contributions” that displays the content that that member has added to the site. This section replaces the ‘View My Content’ link that previously existed on this page.
To access a member’s profile page, click on their profile picture in the Member List of your site’s home page. |
Sharing Is Now Quicker & Easier

Sharing photos, albums, videos and Photo Stories is now easier than ever with the new ‘Share’ feature. Just find the item you want to share and click on the ‘Share This…’ link. Instead of being taken to a separate page, a module will appear that lets you send share emails or generate share links that you can post anywhere online. |
Embedding YouTube & Google Videos

Along with being able to upload your own videos to your myfamily.com site, you can also now embed videos from YouTube and Google into your comments and Discussions. All you need to do is switch to HTML View and enter the embed coding. We’ve also added support for embedded music files, like MP3s and WMAs. |
I love the 2.0. However, I can’t believe there is no way to change the date of when the photo or whatever was taken. I would love to migrate my 1.0 site to that but don’t dare without having all the bugs worked out first.
You can change the date, but it is well hidden.
Go Albums, then click on All photos.
Then click on Edit Photo Info
Then select (click on) the photos you want edit
Then click on Continue
and, at last, you can change the photo details.
I’m also looking forward to 2.0 improvements.
They are coming bit by bit.
Thanks for the updates! HTML View is back again, and I like it much better than the way it is in 1.0 where the whole page has to be reloaded (and where it doesn’t show up initially when posting a comment).
I think your choice to make it so contributors can more easily share content outside of myfamily.com is a really smart one because there are often going to be people I want to share something with outside of the members on our myfamily.com site, and the ability to bring content in through html view is going to really open up possibilities!
I have one little request for the Photo Options sidebar menu though — for our family members who aren’t very “right click” savvy, could you add a “download this image” link? I saw a comment from one member asking the person who posted the photo to send her a copy because “you can’t download photos from this site.” I’m explaining to her about how you can right click and save that way, but it would be nice to have a simpler link.
Or wait! With the new e-mail photo feature I could probably just tell her to send it to herself!
I am still having trouble posting music files on the site. I have done it by the instructionc and all that shows up is a Black Quicktime screen with a ? over it. What have I done wrong. The file is a wma file. Thanks in advance! Also, thank you BillK for posting how to edit the date on pictures! I thought it was taken away.

Is video uploading still working for other people than me? When I uploaded a video a couple days ago, and then someone goes to view it (me included), it just looks like it is trying to load over and over again. The file format I used was .mp4 video
for the record, a couple videos I uploaded 3 days ago that weren’t working magically started working now! Thanks if someone at myfamily helped them along.
I’m also happy to learn how to edit my photos on 2.0 but I don’t look forward to changing all 2000 of them one at a time. What can I look forward to in this department?
Change Site Theme. There are days when I am able to change the theme and it stays that way then I will find that it turns all red or green and the only way I can make it work is to change it to Charcoal which seems to be the only theme that seems to be stable.

Scroll this page up to the Blog Roll on your left. There is a link to MF Community 2.0 site about 1/2 way down that list.

Can I embed my personal blog on my myfamily.com website? MyFamily.com can be my hub and desitnation for my “inner-circle” of family members with whom I want to share more than just my blog. Like the trees. But my external blog can be my place for the friends and family with whom I don’t want to share all the details. Having them linked allows me to update an manage less things.

The thing to remember is that albums are only views of selected photos from ‘All Photos’.
Photos can appear in more than one album, (or no album at all).
To delete photos from an album:
Open the album, then select ‘Add more photos’
(Intuitive, Huh?).
A view of ‘All photos’ will appear with the photos for that album already selected. Then just select or unselect the photos you want to appear in that album.
This answers your second question as well.

Is there anyway I can have photos just showing in the Album and not on the ‘All Photos’ page? Because I enjoy photography as a hobby I used to be able to add photos to our website ‘All Photos’ page and then delete ones that I wished kept in a separate Album of scenic views/wildlife etc. These photos could be viewed by members who weren’t just interested in family photos/ Being able to keep them in a separate Album meant my scenic photos weren’t popping up in the middle of the old photos of ancestors, etc. Since the new additions I have been unable to add my hobby photos without having them on the front page. This last few months I have been having a lot of problems on our website and just now I find that some photos on the front of the Albums have disappeared and also some profile photos now have a red ‘x’ where there was once a photo. I don’t understand why we have Albums when we are unable to then delete the photos of ‘All Photos’. Now when I try to do this, the photo is deleted off the whole website. Also, when putting photos into Albums, I don’t seem able to lift photos which have been posted underneath another photo.
We have been considering paying for the website in from August but the problems over the past month are rather worrying.
All in all, Myfamily is a brilliant way of keeping connected. Just wish we had the recent problems sorted.

No. All Photos means what it says.
Albums are selections from All Photos.
So you can make an Album of Scenic photos for people who just want to see scenic photos, but they will still remain in All Photos.
All Photos can contain hundreds, or even thousands of photos and usually people would not want to look through such a large random collection.
Photos can appear in several albums (or none).
For example, if you appeared in one of your scenic photos, that photo could be in the scenic album AND in the family album.
But if you delete a photo from All Photos, it will disappear from all the Albums also.
That’s the way it works.
Sorry folks. When I first requested an invite to the MFC Community site, I clicked on the URL shown in the Blogroll here on this blog. Have you tried that? Just keep scrolling down till you get to the Blogroll. The URL I put in in an earlier message takes you to the community site. I just assumed it would have an option for asking for an invitation.

Michelle, you used to be able to put photos in an album and delete the copy in all photos. I did it many times as there was no way to organize the all photos. I just tried it again, and it appears that with all the changes, now, if you delete a photo from all photos, it deletes from all albums as well.

Themes and colours changing seems to be a random problem that many people are reporting at present.
No solution given so far. It usually fixes itself by the next day.
Are there any chat sites that can be embedded into the home page? I have a link on the home page of my site directing my members to another page but find it does not get used often, even though I hear chat is a good idea and it is often requested. If I could embed it into the home page where it was clearly and always visible, I believe we would have a lot of users, both frequent and casual, and this would revitalize interest in our site.

Each time I open MyFamily ver.1.0 this screen pops up. **MyFamily Super Site Administration Tips** I have tried for months to get rid of it but nothing works. It is a nuisance and I would appreciate any suggestions on how to get rid of it?
I have a frustration with the What New section when photos are posted.
The album icon appears but also each photo as well – pushing anything else off the screen. Some of our family members have trouble navigating that issue. It would be helpful if ” What’s New” was separated into a photo section and news section. Even when one photo is posted it creates an album icon and also the single photo icon. One of our members posted lots of photos from a reunion after other items were posted and it moved those items back 5 pages so if you looked at the photos using the wonderful slideshow option you could easily miss the other postings.
Like KerryM68 I’m having trouble embedding music. I’m getting the same black quicktime box with a ? in it. The first time I tried embedding, I used MP3 format. When that didn’t work, I uploaded an M4a (which plays fine with the quicktime player when I play it from my machine, so I know the quicktime player works with my set up), & still nothing…what am I doing wrong???
AH! Just figured out embedding the music. The instructions weren’t as clear as they could have been. I was using the entire URL copied from the music shortcut, & only the part AFTER the /Services/FileDownload.ashx/ gets pasted into the embed code. Works perfectly now!
Ok I tried what you did Avasgranmouse & I still get the player with a question mark on it! What am I doing wrong?

When I sae my digital camera (kodak) to record a video it saves it to my computer as quick time. When I try to download it on my family I get a message that says” cannot render this video file please open it in imovie or windows movie maker and save it back as a new file this file contains codecs or other moive features that we cannot read.
How do I fix this I am using windows EP sp2

At the very bottom of that pop up is a box to check for “do not show me these instructions again”. Scroll down and check the box and you should not experience it again. This is a set of instructions for how to manage Super Sites, and it only shows up for Administrators. Firefox blocks it for me so I have never checked the Do Not Show box, thinking someday I would come back and read the instructions!

Isn’t that funny – I just had the same problem this week – my first try with a video out of my camera (Olympus). Well, I went back to the QuickTime version on my computer and I removed the edit ‘handles’ from the bottom slider, and saved it again. Now it uploads fine. You can see it on the 2.0 Community site.
I don’t know exactly what you should do – I’m on a MacBook OS 10.4.11 and I have QuickTime Pro – hence the editing function. Do you have Windows Movie Maker on your machine? Although I don’t know if that will help – I couldn’t get the file to open in iMovie.

That was the first thing I did many , many months ago when the message first appeared. I have repeated checking the box from time to time yet it is still here to haunt me day after day.
I have posted pictures to an album and now they have red x in place of the image. How do I fix this.
Irene, I am on windows XP, using standard quick time as I do not use quick time only when my camera Kodak makes me. I have tried movie maker it could not recognize the file type .mov Windows media player also does not support .mov files. Looks like Joe consumer is again at the mercy of the big boys. I have tried to change it to real player it played perfect on my pc but I cannot download to my family.
I hope My Family supprt reads the blogs to help me out.

@ Frank, I am having the same problem also; except for one video uploaded fine & the 2nd one was taken with the same camera, same day ,3 minutes later & quicktime but got the “cannot render file” I also have a Kodak camera.
I’m also getting the red x on photos – both old and newly uploaded. Not only is that annoying, but I also wonder if the red x photos count against our monthly MB limit?

@ Frank, I hope this helps cause it could be a couple different problems for you. 1st save the movie from your camera using windows. Dont use the video program that came with your camera. Thats whats installing the codecs in your video. I use window picture and fax viewer to take the pics and movies from my camera. It allows you to save them to a folder of your choice. This way your video wont be altered in any way.
why is it that thr is no updates…no new features..and bugs are fixed very slowly in 2.0 …

I find the migration process tiring. Family members are posting stuff on old and new sites, and claiming they never see any one elses info. Info is not migrated very often from old to new, and my less than tech savy family members are not using the site anymore.
This two site business needs to come to some kind of an end soon. It is very frustrating.
I like the new features – but finish the migration – or I am going to have a really hard time getting my family members to stay involved.
I got my family fully migrated back in January 08 now I am being charged for the old 1.0 site that no one is using. Frustrated at MY Family.com I want the old 1.0 gone soon I did my part now it is up to My Family.com to finish what they started.

Admin error.
Now follows lots of office argument and finger-pointing about whose job it is to renew the certificates when they come due.

No, Kjack, not the wrong place for tech questions, but the developers are having a hard time keeping track of everything! The 2.0 Community BillK gave you a link to is the best place to post those questions, although the developer team seems to have their noses pretty close to the grindstone right now! Maybe something new coming up soon??
Or if you want a general forum for your questions on starting a MF site, 1.0 or 2.0, for family, or alumni, or geneology, or whatever, you can sende an e-mail to Admins@adminfamily.com with your (full) name, gender and the name of the site(s) you administer and we will send you invitations to the three ‘joined’ sites where we share ideas, solve problems, give advice, etc, etc, etc.
